Mission of the Friends

  • To encourage understanding of the work of Sweet Briar College's Mary Helen Cochran Library and its branches and to further a realization of the present and future importance of the Library to the College's advancement.
  • To attract to the College Library through gifts or bequests, new resources including funds, books, manuscripts, and other appropriate material beyond what the College budget can provide.
  • To serve as a medium through which the Friends of The Library members may become acquainted and share their enthusiasm for books.

Benefits of Membership

  • Borrowing privileges which apply to all circulating Library collections. These include books, films on video and DVD, books on tape and CD, software and audio CDs.
  • Access to services such as the World Wide Web, subscription computer services on site, and Reference services.
  • In-house use of the Special Collections which include W.H. Auden, T.E. Lawrence, George Meredith, Virginia Woolf and the College Archives.
  • Semi-annual Sweet Briar College Friends Of The Library meetings. The Spring meeting includes a dinner-lecture, which is held in the Florence Elston Conference Center.
  • Annual Sweet Briar College Library Gazette which relates news of member activities and recent aquisitions of the Library.
