Library Facts

Sweet Briar's Mary Helen Cochran Library provides students and faculty with one of the largest private undergraduate collections in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Our buildings house nearly 300,000 items, including over one thousand scholarly journals, an extensive collection of audio and videotape programs, sound recordings, and multimedia software. The library is open 110 hours a week and 24 hours a day during exam periods.

The branch libraries on campus are the:

  • Junius P. Fishburn Music Library
  • Martin C. Shallenberger Library for Rare Books and Archives
  • Media Services Department
  • Wick Library
Media Services offers audio/video production, broadcast facilities, multimedia workstations, and satellite television access.

Our shared automated catalog, LION: Lynchburg Information Online Network, allows students to search the combined holdings of Sweet Briar College and Randolph College. Students may search these databases from terminals in Cochran Library, from campus computer labs, or from personal computers anywhere in the world.

The Martin C. Shallenberger Library for Rare Books and Archives houses the Special Collections which total over 5,000 volumes and manuscripts. The Special Collections include a variety of out-of-print volumes and first editions. The Library collects rare editions by and about these authors:

  • W.H. Auden
  • T.E. Lawrence
  • George Meredith
  • Evelyn Day Mullen
  • Virginia Woolf

The Fanny B. Fletcher Archives, located in the Martin C. Shallenberger Library for Rare Books and Archives, is the repository for the records of the College in addition to a variety of scrapbooks, photographs and diaries that have been donated over the years by alumnae, faculty members and administrators.
