Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell which items in my LION search results list are here at Sweet Briar College Library?
In a Search Results list, notice that to the right of some of the titles, an icon representing the spines of four green books appears. This icon of a short row of books indicates that Sweet Briar College Library owns that item.

How do I request items that are shelved in the Wick Library?
Please see
Requesting Items from Wick.

How can I make the ILL form autofill or autocomplete?
Please see our Interlibrary Loan page.

Can I use my SBC library card at Randolph Macon Women's College?
Yes, but you are required to bring a driver's license, or other official photo ID, to present with your library card.

How can I borrow an item that is checked out as soon as it comes back in?
In order to get in line to be the next person who borrows an item that is currently checked out, you must place a Hold on the item. You cannot place holds on items that are not owned by Sweet Briar. Please see Placing Holds on Checked Out Items.

Why can't I place a hold on certain items in LION?
Some items cannot be placed on hold. These would include reference books, indexes, CDs, unbound magazines, and reserves. Additionally, you may place holds only on items that are owned by Sweet Briar College. You may not place holds on items that are not owned by Sweet Briar.

How can I see which items I have checked out?
Go to Your Library Record and type in the number on the back of your Sweet Briar College ID card. You will retrieve four options: Items Out, Hold Requests, Blocks and Profile. To see the items you have checked out, click on Items Out. The system will list the items you have checked out. If any of your items are overdue, you can renew them here. On the left side of the screen you will see a column of check boxes under a Renew button. Place checks next to the items you want to renew, and click the Renew button at the top. You may renew this way once per item. If you need to renew more than once, please bring the item to the front desk of the main library.

How can I email lists to myself from LION?
After you do a search, on the "Search Results" screen, where your titles are listed, scroll to the bottom of the page. You will see "Email Items" followed by a blank. In the blank you can indicate which items you would like to mail to yourself - or someone else. Your email header is titled "My Search" by default, but you may change it to read whatever you like. In "Email to" add the email address where you would like to send the list, and click on the "Send" button. Be sure to select the radio button "Plain text," which is located above these options. This will ensure that all email programs can read your message.

How do I find the video version instead of the book?
Let's use Hamlet as an example. Do a Title Exact search on Hamlet. After you get your search results, click on the Hamlet with the highest number listed under "Count" on the right side of the screen. On the next "Search Results" screen go to upper right of screen and set Limit By to "Videos & DVD." The next screen will list all items titled "Hamlet," that are in video or DVD format. Remember, only the items with an icon of a short row of books to the right of the title are owned by Sweet Briar College.

I'm looking for a book on a topic but I only want the most recently published ones. How do I do that?
Do a search on your subject. When you get to the "Search Results" screen where the titles are listed, go to the upper right corner of the screen and Sort By Publication date - newest first. If there are a lot of items in your list, the sorting may take a minute or two.

How do I see a list of DVDs or Audiobooks in LION?
Go to LION. Use the Subject Exact search box:

To find a list for format:
Type this search:
Audiobooks Audiobook SBC
DVD DVD SBC
Video Disc Video Disc SBC
Videocassette Videocassettes SBC

These lists will not be in alphabetical order. If you want to alphabetize the list you will have to click on your subject (for example Audiobooks - SBC). On the following screen go to the Sort By pulldown menu on the upper right side of the screen and select Title, Author, Publication Date. Then click Go. Be prepared to wait. After an extended wait, the system will send back an alphabetized list. At this time LION will only list ten items at a time. Yes, it is frustrating.

How do I find French (or other) language films in LION?
Look up subject French language videorecordings - SBC or substitute the language of your choice for the word French. This search will list video discs, video tapes and DVDs. Remember, the items Sweet Briar owns are marked on the "Search Results" screen by an icon of a short row of books to the right of the title.

My search is taking too long. Is there a faster way?
Keyword searches always take longer than Title Exact searches. Always search the exact title, if you know it, to save time.

Why do some items in LION have pictures and others have none?
Newer items feature photos in the database. Pictures are not available for the older items in the collection.

Who do I call when LION isn't working?
Please call Liz Kent at x6315, or Julie Kane at x6311 to report problems with LION.
