Rules for Readers

Because SBC Archives materials are rare, fragile, and unique, they may be consulted only in the SBC Archives under departmental supervision at times to be determined by the Library Faculty during College business hours 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday.

Pencils must be used because the use of ink is not permitted. Nor may the reader make any marks on any departmental materials. In taking notes, please do not rest notepaper directly on books or manuscripts. Tacing is not permitted.

All materials must be handled with care. Maintain loose papers in the order in which they are received. Please bring apparent filing irregularities to our attention, but do not attempt to rearrange manuscript collections or archival records personally. Please note that not all materials contained in the Archives are available to all Readers. Some materials deemed to be confidential in nature might be restricted as to who may see them.

Limited photocopying is possible depending on the fragility of particular items and compliance with copyright law. All requests for copies are subject to review by the Library Faculty and the materials copied with their supervision. Photocopies are made for private study, scholarship or research only.

Digital cameras may be used, but if a flash is needed, please consult the librarian on duty to determine the fragility of the items to be photographed.

Requests for research assistance will be handled as time, the availability of librarians and the fragility of the material allow. Please contact Julie Kane, Head of Technical Services, jkane at sbc dot edu
